We spent the lovely day today in San Fransisco, California. It was an action-packed day filled with trolley's, crepes, boats, and LOTS of walking.
To begin the day, we took a walk over to "Honey Honey." This is the cutest little creperie and has the best city atmosphere. It's a little dive and is jam packed with people looking to grab some delicious breakfast food. My personal favorite of the meals we tried was the KBS dessert crepe. It had kiwis, strawberries, and bananas with
cinnamon and brown sugar all wrapped and fried in a crepe with some whipped cream on top (who could forget that?). Luke had an orange juice that was made right in front of us in an amazing orange squeezer. Hands down the best orange juice I've ever tasted.
After filling our tummies up, we walked 1.4 (very hilly) miles through the city to get to Fisherman's Wharf. This is a harbor filled with tons of shops and restaurants. On our way there, we walked down the famous Lombard Street and had an amazing view of the whole city with the Bay Bridge in the background. Once we reached Fisherman's Wharf we stopped at a few shops and mosey'd around for a bit. I ended up getting some oh-so-delicious cappuccino fudge and a red velvet cupcake to split with my mom.
While grabbing some beers and letting our feet rest, we decided that we were going to take a boat tour around the bay. There are a ton of boat tours available, but there was one in particular that stuck out in my mind. We walked past a gentleman on the pier with a sign that said $15 per tour and it goes past the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz. This stuck out because those were exactly the two places I wanted to see! So, on our way back we checked out how much the other boat tours were. They were all $30. We continued on, in search of the gentleman we passed earlier that day. After a few minutes we found him and got on the boat! Once getting on the boat, it was clear why this ride was a little more cheap than the others. The boat was quite small and kind of "janky." But that just made it all the better, after all, who doesn't like a little quirkyness?
The boat tour was amazing. It was such a surreal view of the city, Golden Gate, and Alcatraz. What I liked about the boat tour was that we
had a guy commentating and explaining different things about the city.
For example, we learned that about 3 people jump from the Golden Gate
each MONTH. There's only a 10% survival rate. We also learned the
specific color of the bridge is "international orange," and by far the
most interesting thing I heard was that Alcatraz had a bakery.
Like....what?
After the tour, we ate at Las Margaritas. The food was absolutely
delicious and it was here that we began to realize that we were all as
red as a lobstah. Whether it's from the wind of the boat tour or being
in the sun all day, I'm still not sure. Regardless we were all in some
pain. As Luke said "ah! I can't furrow my forehead...and that's like my
favorite thing to do." Just moving our face hurts.
All full on burritos and margaritas, we decided it was time to ride an
authentic San Franciscan Trolley (they're technically "cable cars" but I
think trolley is much more fitting :).
The wait was an hour because we started at the very beginning of the
track. It went by fast because, along with many other spots in the
city, there were street performers singing and entertaining us while we
waited. Riding the trolley was a BLAST. Luke and I got to have
standing spots so we hung onto the edge of the car. The best part of
riding a trolley in San Francisco specifically is the amount of hills
you encounter. I'm still not sure how they get those very aged trolleys
up those giant hills. On top of the first hill we had the most amazing
view of the whole city, Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, and, of course,
Golden Gate. It was definitely a surreal moment a photograph could
never capture.
We took the trolley back to our hotel and are resting our feet, getting ready for a big day tomorrow! We are going to spend the morning in the city and drive up to Sonoma Valley.
